Principles for evolutionary organisations

Trying to develop a comprehensive set of principles that turns any organisation in a living organism with optimal chances for long term survival. As an alternative for traditional business plans, goals and KPI’s that have no connection to the long term purpose of the organisation and are not inclusive of the interests of the environment in which it operates. This is as yet unchartered territory (for me) and the list below is my first attempt!

1. Purpose of the organisation is leading for every decision
2. Organisation is a safe space for all involved
3. Organisation operates fully along distributed leadership principles
4. Products and services are always co-designed with customers
5. Development projects always follow agile principles
6. Optimal return is socially acceptable return
7. Organisation is always transparant on every aspect
8. …

Rewilding your senses

Becoming a more open and sensitive person is wonderful but can also be quite a challenge. You can never fully process the ever growing flow of information. At the risk of developing unhealthy overactive behaviour and/or a passive low energy attitude. Both affecting my sense of well being.

I am therefor sometimes tempted to reduce the flow of information by moving (permanently) to a place where the pace is more adapted to our state of evolution. Populated by a limited number of people that are satisfied with what is (a blue zone). This is however not easy as it means disconnecting ourselves from our complicated but ‘native’ environment. For me it feels therefore more healthy and sustainable to…

Next step QOL?

Over the last 20 (sic!) years I have investigated, piloted and refined a variety of existing and emerging practices to close the gap between what we do (as individuals and institutions) and who we really are. Gradually bridging this gap makes me feel more connected (to myself and my environment) and as a consequence increases my sense of well being. Of course this is an ongoing, never ending, process.

Until now I did this mainly within the (relatively secure) realm of my own initiatives / organizations. Time has now come to let that go and to start sharing these insights more openly and start learning from that.

I hereby intend to focus on the following 2 topics:
1. what can I do to remove personal roadblocks in order to re-connect
2. what can I do to make my (work) environment stimulate and embrace connection

Wild Hart Trail (2)

Each trail is a totally new and wonderful experience. The combination of animals, vegetation, weather and people is never the same and has it’s own energy, dynamics and discoveries. Trying not to replicate the experience of the previous (successful) trail used to be quite a challenge for me. This was not good for the group and not not good for me aswel. Glad to report that I have finally been able to leave that behind me (although the group was a ‘challenge’ due the great diversity in life experience and physical condition)!

To Gonno & Hadewych

I believe that the most durable path back the best version of yourself is not so much about trying to achieve a certain goal. It is about creating the conditions under which your life can unfold itself. To create these conditions it is ‘sufficient’ to start clearing the roadblocks one has accumulated throughout the years. One by one, so that your personal purpose can emerge freely as you become lighter.

Wild Hart Trail

Back from first NL Healthcare Wild Hart trip in the Apennines close to Pescaserolli. About 35% of the province of Abruzzo is left to rewild itself. Result is a magnificent area where you can feel that is the nature is gaining strength on many dimensions.

Core of the NLHC program was build on this to rewild our own senses including our harts (as part of a broader culture transformation program) by spending slow time in this area. Even spotted this wild bear on my first morning walk ;o) Also spotted quite a few fresh wolf tracks.

‘Self management’ in HBR

Harvard BR offers a somewhat unbalanced view of self-management (and Holacracy) and the type of organizations that can benefit from this organizational approach.

What is missing in the HBR article is the material positive effect on the well-being of the people involved with the organization implementing this more human approach. And the many benefits that follow from that well-being for all aspects of the organization (from quality of the purpose to the way that purpose is lived by) and as a consequence for the community around it.

Seek fringes and weak ties…

By nature I (we?) tend to focus on strong, deep, long-lasting ties with a relatively small group of people from my own little world. This is good when seeking a long and healthy life as we know from the research on the so called Blue Zones, where people grow very old. When looking for innovation, change, ‘disruption’ (when heading for the bottom of the U, see U Theory) it is however …

Long & healthy in the ‘zone’

Finally planning to visit one of the Blue Zones as defined by Dan Buettner. The epicenter of my first zone is the Parco nazionale del Golfo di Orosei e del Gennargentu in Sardinia. People is these zones are reported to live long (high % of 100+) lives full of well-being. As my attention shifts towards promoting the well-being of (myself and) the people around me as a necessary pre-condition (whatever your underlying purpose is) I’m interested to learn more about what works and why.

Utah desert. Foto by Jim M

Nature always reminds me of the obvious: this time that death is part of live. Around Keg Knoll you can feel this very clearly as ao most trees are both dead an alive. Understanding this at the experiential level makes it easier for me to accept that everything is impermanent and to open up for what really is.

Slow down in Utah desert

When I want to move forward on some topic it is much more effective for me to focus on avoiding certain behavior or to clear specific roadblocks than to try very hard to achieve a certain goal.

So when looking to (re)connect to the whole I try to focus on drastic reduction unnatural input levels and to limit myself to observing carefully whatever is around me without any craving or aversion. To make  this somewhat easier I decided to spend some slow (solo) time in the desert around Keg Knoll in Utah …

Tensions as fuel

I used to avoid tensions as best I could. Either by ignoring them, by hiding or by trying to make them disappear as quickly as possible. Hoping for peace and harmony. Problem is that most tensions do not just disappear and the harmony is therefore only superficial. Ultimately they are bound to show themselves in some way.

On my long journey I did a number of things to learn to embrace tensions. Even to the extent of following a course to become a certified Mediator, trained at resolving conflicts efficiently. I now start to realize that tensions can also form an opportunity for growth. If properly addressed they will contribute to deeper levels of connection and consequently of energy.
